Anyone who is in the EDC community has probably seen Gerber's line of keychain tools. The Gerber shard is probably their most popular item as it is a nice little keychain tool that you can carry around. That said you also have the Mullet which while it may not be as popular is also a good pick. So which one should you go with? Well first let's see which one is which and then we'll see what Chat GPT has to say about it...
Below is the Gerber Shard.
Below is the Gerber Mullet.
On face it looks like both options have some things where they overlap on and some things where they are different. To help us find the difference we asked Chat GPT which one of the items is better. They Shard or the Mullet, and here is what we got in response...
"The choice between the Gerber Shard and the Gerber Mullet depends on your specific needs and preferences.
The Gerber Shard is a compact and lightweight multi-tool that is designed to fit on a keychain. It features seven different tools, including a small and large flathead screwdriver, a Philips head screwdriver, a bottle opener, a pry bar, a wire stripper, and a lanyard hole. The Shard is ideal for everyday carry and small tasks, but it may not be suitable for heavier-duty tasks.
On the other hand, the Gerber Mullet is a slightly larger multi-tool that features nine different tools, including a small and large flathead screwdriver, a Philips head screwdriver, a bottle opener, a pry bar, a wire stripper, a scraper, a nail puller, and a 1/4" hex driver. The Mullet is also designed to fit on a keychain, but it has a more robust construction and may be better suited for heavier-duty tasks.
Overall, if you are looking for a lightweight and compact multi-tool for everyday carry and small tasks, the Gerber Shard may be a good choice. However, if you need a more robust multi-tool that can handle heavier-duty tasks, the Gerber Mullet may be a better option."
From where we are sitting that appears to be a good assessment, especially because when you look at everything else you are seeing comparable things. For example the Shard is around $9 while the Mullet is around $10. Feedback is also similar as the shard has 4.7 star score while the mullet has a 4.6.
When you find yourself in this spot where everything else seems equal, then the tie breaker should go to which one is a better fit for the things you are looking for. If you don't need heavy duty stuff go with shard, if you do need something more robust go with the mullet.
